  5. Fantastic ! I really do like your melancholic songs Colin like were on the Water on Snow album. I am full of thoughts of love lost and can identify with your melancholic type of songs. It puts me in a place where i look back at what i lost and will never get out of my head. I like being in that state of mind for some reason. I guess i am full of melancholy myself !

  8. Hi Colin. Thanks for sharing this – I love it. It’s like the bluesy spirit of Smoke up Close but with a more sophisticated folky backing. I love the way the arrangement grows, and as others have said, it would be great to hear an extended version.

  24. Hi Colin,

    Long time, no speak . . .

I LOVE ‘What makes a fool’ – your vocals are stunning, as always, the arrangement builds beautifully and the instrumentation is nice to hear again. I don’t think we’ve heard such a mix of acoustic/electric guitars, piano, strings and bv’s on a ‘black’ track for many years.

Rich, warm and moving. I’ve had it on repeat all morning which I’ve not done for many years with any track!

The lyrics are a return to the good old (bad old) days – I hope all’s well at home, fella? ;-)

I can hear touches of ‘I can’t make you love me’ (recorded by Bonnie Raitt and George Michael over the years) in the melody as well.

    A triumph – more please :-)

    Regards,

    Huw

  27. I really liked this song, very mellow, a chill out song, but also very moving and emotional. I am very much a person who likes a song based on a feeling, and this song made me feel :-). Highly recommended!

  29. WHY DO YOU EVEN ASK IT?!
ONE OF THE BEST SONGS COLIN MADE and I am serious about it.
    It makes me wanna cry…
    I’m still overwhelmed Ö
    5 stars too me

    — Rose    Jul 2, 11:32 PM
  30. Great song, great production. Reminds me of the stripped-back sound of the last two Neal Diamond albums. Have always loved Colins voice and lyrics, this has to be one of his best.

    — andrew Humbley    Jul 2, 11:01 PM
  31. Liked the song and the lyrics. I imagined it being played live at an outdoor festival just after sunset: lots of atmosphere. The instrumental I felt was held back…a little tame perhaps. The photo? evil! lol!

    — johan    Jul 2, 10:41 PM
  32. it’s amazing. as ever with colin’s work, it leaves me desperately wanting to know more about the intentions behind the lyrics, and the lines “you liked me better when you knew me less” & “i love you so much i’d be your clothes” have blown me away.

    great use of strings.

it really sounds like colin is growing yet further into his voice. i hope i’ll sound that good some day. he remains one of my most significant inspirations.

    stunning.

  34. Love the build up of the song, great lyrics as always. Hope there’s plenty more where that came from. Fantastic.

    — Allison    Jul 2, 10:28 PM
  35. The more I listen to the song the more beautiful it gets. If this is the standard of the forthcoming album I’m getting excited. Per the email request will try to spread the word

    — Mark Hird    Jul 2, 10:25 PM
  36. Every new song you deliver is a birth, and this one is no different.
It’s manicured song writing at it’s peak. Love it – Colin’s lyrics continue to refine – keep working Colin and keep delivering…

    Thank you.

    — Mick Ruddy    Jul 2, 10:21 PM
  37. It`s beautiful man absolutely gorgeous. Lovely wee package too with the photo and lyrics. Class. A suggestion though…I use dial up and the way the track downloads it does not give the size or an estimated time of download. Be useful to give any future track sizes so we on dial up know if its going to be 20mins like it was or an hour if the file had been 15-16mb. Worth the wait though and here`s hoping I see you back in Glasgow sometime! Jimmy
...thanks Jimmy, your comment about file size duly noted (see above)

    — Jimmy Smith    Jul 2, 10:20 PM
  38. Haunting and instantly memorable, typical of Colin Vearncombe

    — Marian    Jul 2, 10:20 PM
  39. I love the services you provide here on the web site. It is quite decent way you treat us. Thanks a lot.

  40. This grows powerfully from verse one through three with some great soulful electric guitar. Nice fade out with some neat piano and a choir in the background. Quite evocative music to be honest and I could feel myself drifting into the role of the betrayed lover.

    — markoc    Jul 2, 10:10 PM
  41. Been a loyal fan since 87. Brilliant as ever CV. Fantastic emotional delivery which gives a new exciting edge to your music. Come on, get you’re finger out and give us a new album real soon as been waiting what seems an eternity!!. Cheers!
