Katie Melua is a beautiful woman. She has a beautiful voice and sings beautifully too. I like her version of Wonderful Life BUT it just cannot compare with the original ‘magical’ version (although I don’t suppose it was meant to). With the original ‘everything’ was perfect; the beautiful, beautiful voice, the fantastic electronic music and the way it was sung – straight from the heart. People used to say that no one could perform the Beatles’ songs like the Beatles. I think the same is true of Mr. Vearncombe’s. The originals were just too good.

hi folks, just been watching various Black vidoe’s and i still struggle to sing along without filling up, if you know what i mean! there are loads of songs from bygone days that make me happy and sad at the same time and make me cry even at the age of 61 years of age.
i also listened to the Kate Melua version of ” Wonderful Life” and it is good, but some songs just can’t be bettered, although Katie’s version is meritable. i would like to think that all artists who do covers, do them because the original song has a special meaning to them. music is Great!

I am with you on this one Pete, this is one of those memorable songs and even though you may not have heard it for years you still know the words, although when I originally heard it sung by Katie Melua on TV, I was singing it in my head as originally sung and had Scott Walker of the Walker Brothers as being the vocalist, only found out today with the news that `Black` is unwell that he was the original singer, hope he gets better soon.

This version is terrible: She’s not even playing the right chords, which has the effect of flattening the lifts. There are some songs that would take a brave man (or woman) to cover, and Wonderful life happens to be one of them. If you can’t add to it, or improve it, then what’s the point? Okay, it may be that, for her, it has meaning – but that should not give her the right to destroy it. Katie Melua has always been vastly over-rated anyway. This song exposes her as a poor musician and a poor judge of her own motives and abilities.

So disagree. Ultimately music is all about subjective taste. As good as the original one was, I think this version is better.

Po prostu jest to inna wersja. Inni śpiewali Wonderful…ale wersja Black jest the best a wersja Katie też jest the best!

Katie zaśpiewała ten song inaczej, w swojej własnej interpretacji i wyszło jej to znakomicie! Oczywiście, rzadko by remake był lepszy od oryginału ale to nie jest remake to jest NOWA INNA WERSJA. Nigdy nie jest tak by wszystko podobało się wszystkim.

One of the most beautiful haunting songs of all time which I particularly relate to the Hillsboro disaster. I remember clearly the Black benefit gig at the Flying Picket in Liverpool before the Hillsboro tragedy was a popular cause. It was a special concert where Colin was able to engender an unusual mix of fun, friendship, support & remembrance. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house when Wonderful Life echoed around the room.
Kate’s version is good & helps such a beautiful song touch new lives.
Thinking of Colin especially at the moment & willing for him to pull through xxx

A mon Amour Tania,
