Compilation album released April 2007

To celebrate the 2007 UK tour with The Christians, we put together a 16-track compilation CD entitled ‘Black:CV’.

Also Available:
Black: CV - BlackBlackScratch-Buy_Album_nothumb

Sleeve notes:

Born in 1962, when Elvis’s Good Luck Charm was Number One and playing on the radio, Colin Vearncombe, otherwise known as Black, is about ready to lose himself – again.

An artist’s life involves frequently losing oneself. For a singer-songwriter, it’s an important part of the process of creating something that no-one has heard before; a melody, a lyric, a performance. A unique combination of instances, filtered through a life.

We, as audience, find him here in a collection of recordings; fleeting moments captured in time. Hardly more than an outline sketch of a career which already spans over twenty five years but a sketch which at least indicates markers in a journey that in many ways has barely begun.

The journey for any real artist is never finished. The artist’s creative life, punctuated by ‘terrible highs and fabulous lows’ is a life of constant evolution and discovery. It has to be that way, otherwise art turns into craft and demands the constant repetition of a formula, which while potentially briefly satisfying an audience, can never fulfil the needs of the artist committed to their own journey.

Along the way, published work only marks out moments of stopping to say ‘this stage is interesting’. It neither encapsulates nor defines anything other than that stopping point and as with all journeys, every stopping point eventually becomes the next starting point.

It is for the listener to connect the dots that form along the way, to make conclusions and judgements about connections and influences because artists are rarely interested in their own past; they are too busy worrying about their future.

But is an artist’s journey any different from anyone else’s? Isn’t it simply that artists choose to let others experience their work – to lay bare a part of their lives and invite others to consider it? If any of us had the courage (or is it mania?) to document our journey in such a publicly naked fashion, would we not feel the same? How much would we, or could we, rely on the audience for validation?

This compilation, the first ever to be actually compiled by Colin, has been chosen from a catalogue of more than one hundred stopping points. It could have been completely different, but it would still have told the same story.

So when I have to go before St. Peter I’ll knock on his neon door and say “look at what came to be my journey” – Two Churches

    Hi Colin

I will buy the EP on 20th in Nottingham and hope will see you to sign it after the show. Like what I have heard

You may not remember but I was the person that probably annoyed u greatly by asking for approx 20 cd’s to be signed when u played Sheffield in 2005! U were of course a gentlemen and signed all without a moan. Apologies I was star struck!

Seen u in Nottingham during the Comedy tour, Jazz Cafe at Camden for Are We Having Fun Yet (full band it was awesome), Ronnie Scott’s Birmingham. Travelled a lot to see u so fab I can see u on my doorstep again!

What happened to the bbc radio sessions that were originally planned for this reissue? The second seems a bit light for me. It would have been nice to fill the disc right up like disc 1. Oh well.
really liking the new EPs and and the new website.
    Keep up the good work!

  4. Dan 10 April 2013 at 9:17 am #

Love the look of the new website 🙂

I’m really enjoying the “Wonderful Life” reissue the Album sounds as great as ever and brings back so many happy memories singing along to it in my teenage years..
I also hope to hear the Janice Long Session tracks that were planned for this reissue, perhaps they will turn up sometime in the future.
“I’m Not Afraid” had a 12″ version, that would’ve been great to include also 🙂
Great to hear Colin’s version of events whilst recording this Album with Dave Dix..
Could you tell me where Sometimes (Echo Bass and Sax) & Everything’s (The Fairly Mental Mix) on which format they were originally released..
I had only heard “Birthday Night” until fairly recently from youtube so to hear it in cd quality is a real treat, as are all the fabulous b-sides.
Are there any plans to release your WEA recordings onto CD I love all those tracks 🙂
Fingers crossed for “Comedy” and “Black” now.
I’m coming to see you live on the 21st April can’t wait 🙂

Would be good to see you and Al Stewart on stage together.

Patricia

Thanks for highlighting the Cherry Red boxed set. Come for the Black and stay for the rest! It looks like a very rewarding selection! I still need the “Human Features” single, but getting the A-side on CD for about the cost of the 7″ – with a boatload of other amazing tracks, many by other favorite groups that I collect, looks like money well spent.

Means so much, at so many times in my life. Thank you!!!!!

I was just revisiting this album this week. I love the transition back into band arrangements after the intense, harmonica rack catharsis of “Smoke Up Close” and the acoustic releases bookending it. After that purifying minimalism of the early naughties, the mood turned more expansive again, yet not fully baroque.

I work as a reporter for the Bury Times newspaper in Grt Manchester and about 1985 was doing a feature on the town’s Square One recording studios. On entry, I passed a guy who I thought was the janitor or odd job man. Turned out it was Black who, if memory serves me correctly, actually recorded the Wonderful Life album there.

This album is in my top 50 list of all time. You can listen it over and over. I think it is clearly one of the most underrated albums of all time as well.

    Highly recommended

  15. pramila 10 November 2013 at 1:52 pm #

lyrics are meaningful and music is captivating. are your lyrics inspired by your love. One who leaves there should be no regrets they leave for good. See to the brighter side of love . No more self pity. Go ahead in life.

  16. pramila 10 November 2013 at 1:58 pm #

lyrics are meaningful and music is captivating .lyrics speak of matters of the heart which should be secret life has to learn its own lessons from experiences. I would like u to put a big smile whenever u perform in public. please.A hearty laugh would do because your expressions come in your eyes and face which would humble anyone down which I do not like.

Best song from the album. As usual colin at his best with pinching and thorny lyrics.(Heart of the matter)

Listened this album for thousand times maybe, and will go on for million times……

  19. Yannick Couttin 1 February 2014 at 10:43 am #

If I should have to live with only 3 albums, this one would definitly be part of it!
Already listened a hundred times and still glad to listen again…
Music sometimes bluesy and sad and sometimes joyful and happy is just perfect.
Black voice is just a pure wonder and surprising when reaching higher notes.
Beautiful melodies you want to hear again and again
Each song has its own mood and are well chosen to complete the tracklist.

Thank you so much Colin to share your feelings and talent with us.

PS : Please think about France for a live tour!

  20. Craig Land 17 February 2014 at 4:09 pm #

Any reason why we are not seeing any dates in the London and Home Counties area?

    • Nero 17 February 2014 at 4:12 pm #

Hi Craig – the Farncombe gig is in Surrey if that’s any good?

There are many reasons for the way the tour routing pans out – including the offers we get and how we can line them all up together in a way around the country that makes sense.
If the area you’re looking for isn’t on the list this time, then it hopefully will be next time. We’re planning that ‘next time’ will be later this year.

  21. Paul Rendel 23 February 2014 at 12:32 pm #

Wow! Just had a few listens to this EP. What an odd location to play but the end product sounds fantastic. Always good to hear those songs played with a full band live. Looking forward to the gig in Shaw. P x

Good evening Colin. Almost six years since Water On Stone, which was close to perfection musically and vocally speaking. Was this silent sequence of life the same as the 1993-1999 hiatus ?

  26. Neil 19 October 2014 at 5:29 am #

Great to see you’re making music! I really like your new stuff. Just as good as anything you did in the 80’s.

      Hi Fabrice

Not certain of your question here – all payments are made through the Pledge website – you should be given the chance to pay when you pledge. Payments can be made to the site from anywhere in the world.

  29. Andrew Perrin 14 November 2014 at 10:44 am #

Colin where do get your inspiration from to make such great songs

  30. Will McKeag 26 November 2014 at 10:38 pm #

I’ve recently revisited this album after a gap of about 20 years and it’s a truly outstanding recording.

Unfortunately, there is one track that I dislike intensely – It’s Not Over Yet – but the remaining tracks are sublime. You’re a Big Girl Now and I Can Laugh About it Now are perfection, while No-one None Nothing and All We Need Is the Money are only a shade behind. Along with another couple of tracks from his early albums – Sweetest Smile and Feel Like Change – I believe these songs are as good as any recorded by anyone from 1987-1991. The combination of strong lyrical songwriting and arrangement with Colin’s warm, soulful and wistful voice is timeless.

  31. Fathima Suleman 1 December 2014 at 7:00 am #

Greetings from one of your biggest fan in SA! I think you have an amazing voice and look amazing, more especially in ”wonderful-life” video! What was the inspiration behind your stage name BLACK,and behind the above-mentioned-song? Also what is the typical day like in the life of Colin Vearncombe??

  33. Dimitri 28 December 2014 at 2:56 pm #

It’s such a joy to find you again!

In Italy, back then, I was among the first to buy this album, and later on “Comedy”.
Countless times these songs cradled my heart. It’s been always impossible to forget that “just like a forming rainbow, just like the stars in the sky, life should never feel small”. This album was never felt small.

Thank you for your sweet music, Mr. Vearncombe

    Hi Colin ,
Really glad to see you are coming to Aberdeen as I normally travel to Glasgow to see you .( missed last years through illness ) .Anyway I am wondering if you will be playing paradise lost on this tour set.

  35. Dave 5 February 2015 at 5:09 am #

I first saw you perform in concert way back in Ottawa when you opened for Chris De Burgh. You impressed and I bought the Comedy CD the next day and have purchased all your releases since (and it wasn’t easy finding them in Canada back in the pre-Internet days). I re-purchased your CDs (as many as I could find) when an unkind stranger robbed my place on an Xmas Day and had the discerning taste to take all your CDs along with many others. I now live in Australia and want to know if you have any plans to perform here?

Dear Colin, Hello! I first heard Your song “Wonderful life” in 1994, when he was saying goodbye forever my girl, my unfulfilled life. She gave me a cassette with Your famous song. Then I was a cadet in the Ukraine. I became an officer, a major. Again there was love in my life, joy and sorrow.. Everything was, but she donated to my favorite recording of Your song still in my heart, she is nostalgic, quiet sadness and unfulfilled hope. Thank You for the warmth in my memories, frozen in time to the music and the words of my heart. With respect. Sasha (Alexander).

  43. ABELARDO 13 April 2015 at 8:55 am #

I foud it yesterday into my mailbox!!!! great!!!
Need to listen it slowly, but at first view it sounds nice. Production and instrumental arrangements are fantastic. Some of the songs seems quiet good… some others may be bit wasted (good ideas, but they don´t go as far as they could).
Anyway I allways spect a new “Comedy”… you know, and so great expectatives use tu be bad counselors.
But I need to listen it more and forget this expectatives… and I feel that finally it is a very good album.
Sorry for my imperfect english… I hope you can understand what I try to.
Congratulations, Collin. Keep making music…. I’ll Always keep purchasing and enjoying it.

    Hi Colin
So gutted that the Aberdeen concert on the 21st April has been cancelled. I had asked my sister to come along as well to here you and Calum playing. Been playing the cd all the time and luv it to bits.
Thank you for my t-shirt and signed CD.
Hopefully you may in the near future come back up north to the Highlands- as you will always be warmly welcome here.
Hope the rest of the concerts go down well. I had planned the 21st as my day off – so disappointed it’s been called off.
    Take care.
Graham Laing – from Inverness – a true fan.

  47. Glenn Cook 17 April 2015 at 11:26 pm #

    Wonderful- Live
Just got back from one of the finest gigs ever and I’ve seen Steve Miller with his band in an acuoustic set.
Colin’s voice was spot on- stunningly.

Both his and Calum MacColl playing was wonderful.
Calum just enhances Colin’s performance so much.

If you get a chance to attend a concert then beg borrow or steal to get a ticket.

If you do I really envy you attending.

  48. Glenn Cook 18 April 2015 at 6:07 pm #

I was fortunate to attend last nights concert in the Ropery Hall Barton.
    It was wonderful.

Colin and Callum were on sparkling form and the audience were wonderful who listened in rapt silence to the stunning music.

This repect was brilliant to all who listened because we had absolutely no distractions when we shared the concert.

Indeed it was only Colin who had a cough.
I just wish I could have had a copy of the concert so that I can revisit the brilliance.

Afterwards Colin was kind enough to sign all my Cds and LPs and chat.

    A confession?
Back in the day I would put Black LPs on as ‘I entertained’ ladies in my house in my Bachelor Days.

I was able to thank Colin personally for all his unknown help in setting the mood and ambience.

I also want Wonderful Life to be played at my Funeral.

    Thanks for your music!!!

Still regualrly listen to Wonderful Life after all these years (sorry to look back) and just came across the new album on Spotify. Sounds great, the voice is better than ever and the soungs sounded great on the first listen. No clear favourite track but Womanly Panther with its latin tango influence is the pick for me. Hoping to be Under the Bridge next Friday.

Love the single! can hear it on the radio now and everywhere! Such a great choice…loving the album…thankyou…

  55. Phil Nic 4 May 2015 at 5:51 pm #

A superb body of work, not one average song amongst the lot and I love the way the album flows and that no filler has been added to any of the songs

It’s also exceptionally well produced and mixed with CV’s vocals given the chance to shine.

This is arguably as good as ‘Black’ and that is going some as that is a masterpiece in it’s own right. Well done Mr V, look forward to more in the future to which I’ll happily pledge again. 🙂

Great to see the set at Bishops Cleeve – a fine venue too. I’m an original disciple but my wife became an instant fan and bought wonderful life cd but not signed as there was such a throng of people wanting to thank Colin.More people need to know just what a talent Colin is, ably supported by Calum. The rapport was a joy. See you next time and thanks again for great night.

Katie Melua is a beautiful woman. She has a beautiful voice and sings beautifully too. I like her version of Wonderful Life BUT it just cannot compare with the original ‘magical’ version (although I don’t suppose it was meant to). With the original ‘everything’ was perfect; the beautiful, beautiful voice, the fantastic electronic music and the way it was sung – straight from the heart. People used to say that no one could perform the Beatles’ songs like the Beatles. I think the same is true of Mr. Vearncombe’s. The originals were just too good.

hi folks, just been watching various Black vidoe’s and i still struggle to sing along without filling up, if you know what i mean! there are loads of songs from bygone days that make me happy and sad at the same time and make me cry even at the age of 61 years of age.
i also listened to the Kate Melua version of ” Wonderful Life” and it is good, but some songs just can’t be bettered, although Katie’s version is meritable. i would like to think that all artists who do covers, do them because the original song has a special meaning to them. music is Great!

    • Christine Dearnaley 15 January 2016 at 11:04 am #

I am with you on this one Pete, this is one of those memorable songs and even though you may not have heard it for years you still know the words, although when I originally heard it sung by Katie Melua on TV, I was singing it in my head as originally sung and had Scott Walker of the Walker Brothers as being the vocalist, only found out today with the news that `Black` is unwell that he was the original singer, hope he gets better soon.

Loved this artist since the late 80’s.

Just sampling some of these new songs brings back the old appreciation of a wonderful and gifted artist.
Heading to iTunes to buy it right now…

Any chance of a vinyl pressing?

  74. Jon 17 December 2015 at 8:10 pm #

Second that. Would love this on vinyl!

  75. Ray Cathode 4 January 2016 at 9:04 am #

This version is terrible: She’s not even playing the right chords, which has the effect of flattening the lifts. There are some songs that would take a brave man (or woman) to cover, and Wonderful life happens to be one of them. If you can’t add to it, or improve it, then what’s the point? Okay, it may be that, for her, it has meaning – but that should not give her the right to destroy it. Katie Melua has always been vastly over-rated anyway. This song exposes her as a poor musician and a poor judge of her own motives and abilities.

    • John Boomsma 25 January 2016 at 1:09 am #

So disagree. Ultimately music is all about subjective taste. As good as the original one was, I think this version is better.

      • Dala Dena 13 April 2016 at 8:08 pm #

Po prostu jest to inna wersja. Inni śpiewali Wonderful…ale wersja Black jest the best a wersja Katie też jest the best!

    • Dala Dena 13 April 2016 at 8:05 pm #

Katie zaśpiewała ten song inaczej, w swojej własnej interpretacji i wyszło jej to znakomicie! Oczywiście, rzadko by remake był lepszy od oryginału ale to nie jest remake to jest NOWA INNA WERSJA. Nigdy nie jest tak by wszystko podobało się wszystkim.

    Dear Colin,
Thirteen years ago I wrote to you sharing how much of an impact your music has had on me. I told you your music was part of the soundtrack of my life. You were very kind to reply, and you told me that music is, indeed, very important and that “if you cannot play it, (you) must find it.”

When I heard of your accident it shook me as if it had happened to a friend because, I realize, it has happened to a friend. We might have never met, but such is the power of music.

Colin, out there there is a lot of music for you to find and to bring to us. You need to get well and go on and a lot of people are here rooting for you and your loved ones.

Take care. I’m looking forward to finally seeing you play life.

    All the best,

    So sorry to hear,
I went to see Colin Vearncombe in Manchester and had the pleasure meeting him very briefly after a performance.
I enjoyed it tremendously and I was very impressed with his performance and how he handled a broken microphone.
The grace and ease in which he handled the stress and disappointment of an expensive microphone breaking were very inspiring. The music, voice and the skills as a performer are very high and I found him to be a gifted performer.
However as a human being he impressed me most. I have not seen many people on a stage that touched me like that.
If there is any justice in the world and you get back what you put out in the universe a speedy recovery is well deserved.
The lyrics of sweetest smile run through my head every now and then and although it’s sad song it never fails to make me happy. I have a battery somewhere in my body that needs to be charged with beauty like that. Colin Vearncombe provides that, much needed, charge on many occasion and will continue to do so in the future. Thank you for that.

Colin, family and friends – There’s a lot of heartfelt support here from people whose lives have been genuinely touched by Colin’s music. It has been the soundtrack to many of our lives for decades – it’s certainly been a constant in mine. For all that time I’ve taken so much from the music that now at a time like this, I feel I ought to reciprocate. But alas all we can do is offer support and let you know we care. So hang in there guys – we’re thinking of you, wishing Colin a speedy recovery, and you all a rapid return to normality.

So sad to hear this news. Have been a fan of Colin’s since 1987 and had the privilege of chatting to him after he and Calum performed together in Airdrie last April……..such a down to earth, charming and wonderful man. Colin was suffering with a touch of laryngitis on the night but he still gave it 100% regardless and treated his audience to an awesome performance. His voice sounded on top form as ever.
Come on Colin, praying for a speedy and full recovery for you. My thoughts are constantly with you and your loved ones during this difficult time. Hoping to hear some positive news soon.

God bless you COLIN and yours. A Tons of force.

“Dear God, allow the good Spirits who accompany me to help me when I am in difficulty and uphold me when I falter. Lord, may they inspire me with faith, hope and charity; may they be a point of support, an inspiration and a testimony of Your mercy. In short, may I always encounter in them the strength that I lack for the tests of life, the strength to resist all evil suggestions, the faith that saves and the love that consoles.

There is nothing I can say that can make this easier, but I really hope that Colin can fight and pull through this. He has written some beautiful songs and they have at the very least impacted on some of our lives… something to be proud of.. I’m a bit of a rocker by nature, but The Sweetest Smile is one of my favourite songs from the 1980s… my thoughts are with you!

  297. Robin Pullen 20 January 2016 at 10:25 am #

The news of Colin’s accident was on BBC teletext the other day and I can’t help but think that Colin would find this so ironic that it takes something like this to get him back in the mainstream press, even if only for a day. When I met Colin in 2005 and told him that I thought that he has the most beautiful voice in music today he seemed taken aback and was very humble about it all, but, as we know, this is what Colin is like as a man. One of the most beautiful and divine talents who has ever graced the wonderful world of music. My continued thoughts and prayers are with his family who I know are so very close to Colin’s heart. xx

  298. Rosa 20 January 2016 at 10:38 am #

Say to him that I have been happy seeing him singing in direct. That thanks for his talent, for his effort, for his generosity and naturalness. That we love him. That we stick still to the miracle. Thanks for the information.

  299. Keith Brown 20 January 2016 at 10:57 am #

I met Colin at The Cluny, in Newcastle. In 1984, I broke my neck and had serious head-injuries and numerous other problems. I came out of a coma, to the music of Robert Palmer. Not a word was a Black and Bob collaboration. Can you play something that means A LOT, to Colin? Every kinda people was/is one of my #1 tunes and it brought me out of a coma and my parents played me other songs, by Al Jolson, Amen Corner, Sting, Jeff Beck, Santana and had my parents, recorded on a cassette tape. I, eventually, woke up….or as the Robert Palmer song says, I woke up laughing!!!
Colin, when you DO wake up, just take things one day at a time. Your head and our brain have had a BIG trauma. You should try to do NOTHING, for some time. Give yourself some healing time.
    God bless you!!

Hey Colin and family. I just read the news, and am heartbroken at the news. Colin has been a key part of my teen and adult life, and I cannot imagine life without him in it. Colin, like Bowie, has given us so many great moments….. I recall hearing Hey Presto! for the first time, before Wonderful Life came out, and I was hooked. It was 1983, and I wrote his record company WEA to gush at his greatness….. Colin himself wrote me back….. what a class act.

I just looked, and I have 172 songs on my hard drive of Colin’s music…. and I have all of his vinyl. I will be playing his music all day as I work in my studio, and be sending positive thoughts. We love you Colin. Cheers, Charley. XOXO

My thoughts truly go out to Colin and his family, I remember his big hit coming out when I was very young. I very much hope this comment will encourage his family and help Colin pull through. Please allow me to tell you about someone I know who is known as ” the miracle man, ” his name is Morris Goodman, many years ago he was in a serious plane crash, his 1st and 2nd cervical vertebrae were crushed, his diaphram and wind pipe were damaged, he was clinically dead for about 10 minutes, he was paralysed from the neck down, at least he was told he was by all the doctors, yet 8 months later he walked out of the hospital, defying all doctors prognosis, when asked much later how he recovered he said this, ” the doctors, of course, said I would be a vegetable for the rest of my life, that was the picture they saw of me, but it didn’t matter what they thought, the main thing was what I thought, I pictured myself a normal person again, walking out of the hospital, “, he went on to say if he could sum up what he went through it would be in 6 words, ” man becomes what he thinks about, ” I truly hope this is of some help, blessings to you all.

  336. John Thorne 20 January 2016 at 8:15 pm #

I recently moved from England to Ireland as Colin has done before me. I have four of his albums in my record collection. I hope he pulls through. My thoughts are with his family.

    Dear Colin
You are truly in my thoughts, I hope that the miracle arrives.
I’ve never met you, only seen you perform once. But your albums and wonderful songs have been a core soundtrack to my life since my teens, still copies sit in my car an on my phone, when others come and go.

You’re soundtrack has enhanced the happy times and mirrored my melancholy in not so good times.

I hope that your spirit and inner strength brings you back to your family and when possible to those who love your voice and songs.

Sending every wish for strength and power.

So sorry to hear this tragic news.

Wonderful Life, without doubt one of the best songs of the 1980’s, always on my playlist……

Liverpool is thinking of you Colin……

  344. john r welsh 20 January 2016 at 10:42 pm #

Thinking of you Colin and your family. You don’t know me but you are a very important part of my life, my late teenage years in Liverpool were wonderful thanks to your music and the other great music in Liverpool at that time. The International Garden Festival in the summer of 1984 is embedded in my memory bank, treading grapes to produce ‘Chateau de Mersey’, getting a picture with Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, walking through the stunning landscaped gardens of the world, all in Otterspool! But the highlight of the festival was your show under the big top. Every song a classic, at that time you were still almost unknown outside Liverpool, ‘our’ golden secret! Thankfully the show was on the local radio and I still play this regularly now, when I want to remember being 18 again! From afar I am trying to be positive for you and for your family. Please come back. Love John

Truely the saddest of news. The year is still quite young and already we have lost so many amazingly talented people. I would like to think that they could make do with Bowie rocking out “up there” and spare Colin to keep us entertained for a while longer. I’ve been touched and blessed by his music since the very start (Mum bought me his very 1st album as it had “Oh, Stephen” on it and she thought it would make a nice gift. Little did she know I would be such a fan all these years later! I, as I’m sure many of us all, have had the pleasure of meeting Colin on a couple of occaisions and found him so warm, so sincere and so very approachable. Nothing wil ever beat sitting in a London recording studio watching him record an album a few years back. To see the man behind the voice that you’ve listened to for so many years sitting within touching distance was an unforgettable experience and I will be sending every kind of well-wishing, thoughts, hopes and prayer for the miracle we so very need. With love.

such sad news. Colin was my first “favourite singer” as a teenager. I got my first ever cassette walkman for christmas and the only cassette I played on it for the first 3 months was Black.

Saw Black live at Liverpool Empire

Good heavens, this latest update really is distressing. Colin, do you hear the myriad voices imploring you to get well? We need you. Especially in these troubled times, with so many evil and sad things happening in the world, we need islands of comfort and sanity and hope. You’re such an island to me. I feel more at home in this world knowing that there are people like you out there. We need to hear more of your voice, more of your music and of your take on this curious thing called life. And as I’m looking at the Wonderful Life lyric sheet, handwritten by you, that takes pride of place in my living room, I feel sure you’re still here with us, just taking a pause. It exudes the same strong energy as ever. So come on, don’t give up, keep fighting. You’re eagerly awaited back by so many.
Keeping my fingers crossed for tomorrow’s scan and wishing Colin’s family much strength, Katharina

  389. Peter Critchley 22 January 2016 at 2:13 pm #

Love, light, positive energies and prayers being sent the way of Colin and his family. I go back to the days when Wonderful Life had yet to be a hit. Those first two albums were the soundtrack of my student days in Liverpool, but more than that they were my friends on lonely nights. There’s a sad melancholic beauty to Colin’s music that rings true, gets beyond the surfaces and superficialities of life to its true realities, the personal realities we all know and experience, the ‘little details’ that make for a whole and meaningful life. Beautifully observed and crafted, this music touches the soul.

Colin is getting better and better as a singer and songwriter. Last year’s Blind Faith was wonderful. Listen to the song Beautiful and you’ll agree that Colin is reaching his peak. I dearly hope he pulls through. I remember in the mid-eighties telling everyone to watch this guy, he’s good. He may not have had the string of hit records, by which some measure success, but he has more than redeemed every promise made on those first two albums. There are just so many great songs to his name. Try “Walk on Frozen Water” for just one. “Beautiful”, “Scrapbook of Ghosts”, “Agnes’ Prayer”. And that’s just for starters. A major talent, and a major part of the lives of those who were wise enough to investigate further beyond the great hit records. So good in intimate venues. It’s that kind of music.

So I am, as we all are, wishing, hoping, praying for a miracle.

I just wanted to add my own few thoughts re the news of Colin’s accident. As a broadcaster here in Scotland I have used music from Colin’s career on many occasions. I had the huge pleasure of interviewing him in an Edinburgh hotel quite some years ago now. I do recall that he was a most engaging, pleasant person who gave me a lot of time and space prior to the show he was in town to do. Via my connections with a particular promotions company I have been able to keep up with his rather excellent material which has been coming out in the last couple of years. His has to be one of the most instantly recognisable voices the UK has produced. A talented writer who has brought much happiness to the fans of quality music. So my thoughts go out to Colin, his nearest and dearest, plus all the colleagues with whom Colin has worked throughout his long career at this difficult time. Thank you for the music Colin.

I made a point of seeing Colin at Splashy Fen a music festival in South Africa and then in a small intimate live musive venue in Melville, Jo’burg – what an experience to see him live!!! The song Wonderful Life is one of those songs that touches ones soul and does not let go because its sends a message of hope and joy which is what living life to the fullest is about. You are in my thoughts and prayers! Wishing you and your family strength and blessings in this difficult time

  416. Berny Parkes 24 January 2016 at 12:01 pm #

One of the most beautiful haunting songs of all time which I particularly relate to the Hillsboro disaster. I remember clearly the Black benefit gig at the Flying Picket in Liverpool before the Hillsboro tragedy was a popular cause. It was a special concert where Colin was able to engender an unusual mix of fun, friendship, support & remembrance. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house when Wonderful Life echoed around the room.
Kate’s version is good & helps such a beautiful song touch new lives.
Thinking of Colin especially at the moment & willing for him to pull through xxx

I´m just sitting here… staring at this blank box open to my thoughts, and can´t think a single proper thought.
OF COURSE I remember hugging you at your 30-person comeback concert back in London in, like, 2012 maybe, and the kiss you´ve sent via photograph to my wife. Such a kind, great, great, GREAT person – how the f*cking f*ck can some GOD allow YOU to have such a tragedy? You are supposed here to teach my children or even grandchildren one day to hear the golden warmth through your still to be written songs! There is so much left for you to stay, the world is turning more and more grey, and you were always like a rock, some sort of constant, a lighthouse.
And of course I remember the day I bought your second album from the black market in Budapest. The awe with which I opened it and started listening to the first tunes. The shivers.
And of course I remember the endless times when I have been given the honour to listen to any of your songs. On the road, in trains, while travelling, while making love, while leaving or coming somewhere. Alone, in company, at a party or one of your gigs.
So… what the hell can I say to this page, this box, and maybe a few who read this, that wouldn´t be so minute in comparison to the shock and emptiness I feel right now?
OF COURSE I wish that it could be undone, or at least if that´s not possible, then let you recovery fully by a great miracle some gods are allegedly good for.
I wish your family the bless to go through this tragic time with the biggest possible strength and care for each other.
The world needs blokes like you so desperately.

What the f*ck can I say more?!
    Come back, please.

    Hello Colin,

I am heartbroken to read today’s update. I want to keep the hope as long as you are alive, though. I hope you are comfortable and that you are not suffering.

On Friday I popped Are We Having Fun Yet? in my radio to listen to as I drove to work. It had been a while since I listened to that one and it seemed like a fitting way to send good energy your way. I sang along with you to Don’t Take the Silence Too Hard, Swingtime moved me as always, loved Wishing You Were Here and Leaving Song, which ended just as I was pulling in my parking space, had a whole new meaning considering the circumstances. I responded with “you better not” to your last line.

Colin, now that I got in front of the computer I don’t know what to say. I am very upset over this – it is so absurd and unjust. I guess I wanted to tell you that, if the worst comes to pass, you are leaving so much beauty behind, you have touched so many people that, in a way, you will live forever. I hope your loved ones find some consolation in this – that your voice stays with us, that it is so many of us who, even though we did not have the privilege to know you personally, now feel that we are losing a friend because you gave us so much with your music, you helped us to articulate and make sense of our feelings and made our lives so much better.

Apparently it is true that the best leave us way too soon. However, as I said, I am clinging to hope. My heart goes to your loved ones in this awful time.

    With Admiration and Respect,

Thinking of you all at this time. I wrote to Colin after his first or second single, either More than the Sun or Hey Presto back in 1984. Both I played endlessly. I wrote to him encouraging him to tell him what an amazing songwriter he is and he kindly wrote back. That meant so much to me and was thrilled about his later success. I pray for him and all the family this time, very much in my thoughts.

To Colin’s Boys, Wife, and Extended Family and Friends,

I am deeply saddened by the loss of Colin. My heart goes out to each and everyone of you. When we lose someone we love, it seems that time stands still. What moves through us is a silence, a quiet sadness, a longing for one more day, one more word, one more touch. We may not understand why he left, before you were ready to say good-bye, but his life gave you memories too beautiful to forget. When reason fails, hold tight to those memories for comfort, lean on your friends and family for strength. Let yourself cry, knowing that each tear is a note of love rising to the heavens. Death only comes to those who leave no memories; for whose existence was cherished, they will always be alive in the chambers of the heart. As you comprehend this profound loss, I wish you peace to bring you comfort, courage to face the days ahead, and loving memories to forever hold in your hearts. I don’t know how to heal your pain, but I wish I could. Thinking of you all, in this difficult time. All my Love, Shelley, From Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

Today is a very sad day for all of us. We have lost a great songwriter, a positive artist, a friend, a brother. To me Colin was symbolized by one of the most beautiful song ever written. An anthem! An absolute melody! He gave us hope in writing such a positive song, that is “wonderful life”. During my teenage days, it was not always easy to grow up. However, every time I heard Colin singing his most famous song (but there are so many others worth remembering), my day was made. It was happiness after all. And for that, Colin, you will always remain in my mind. Rest in peace!

Colin was my favourite singer when I was about 13 years old. After that, I continued to follow him until the present date. He made so much excellent music, including his last album. So sad that he had to leave us so early. My condolences to his family and all others who were close to him.

There is nothing that compares to Colin’s music: his tender voice, the sound and all the great lyrics, that accompanied my life…. Thank you so much Colin! I am grateful that I had the opportunity to attend some of his concerts: In November 2015 he came to my hometown Munich and we talked to each other for I while. I am unable to believe that this will never happen again. You have deeply touched my heart and my soul. Your feelings and thoughts will forever live on in your songs.

Black were part of the soundtrack to my student days, and it was a time of looking forward to the future with great optimism. I bought the albums as they came along, heard the music and the message become enriched by time and by life. Colin Vearncombe was one of the finest singers and songwriters we have ever seen. Simple as that. And he was a wonderful human being who lived his life with love, kindness, humility and generosity of spirit. He wrote and sang songs of innocence and experience, giving us poignant lyrics and beautiful music which expressed the full range of human emotions: love, regret, loss, separation, heartbreak and love again. A beautiful soul. And irreplaceable. A perfect case.

    Dear all,

I only know Colin’s “hit”, but this one song filled a whole universe in my soul. I was 7, maybe 8 when it came out and I have strong memories of it when it was on the air in France. I remember listening to it while playing Amstrad computer games. It was the radio then. It was the technology we had. And this mix of “old new” stuff, the radio, the computer with loading cassettes and this “hit” being the most romantic ballad ever and not something generic, reflected the pace of our lives at the time, that wasnt so brisk with the demanding jobs, or looking for one, and the connected ways of today. It was very NOW, and romantic and nurturring. I feel sad and upset and send my deepest and warm feelings to his fans and family. ST

This is such a blow. I’m still lost for words. And yet I feel like talking about it because returning to business as usual just like that won’t work either. This all seems so brutal and unreal, a bad dream if there ever was one. And yet it isn’t a dream. It was in the news even on the screens in the Düsseldorf underground today.
Although I’ve seen Colin perform live only twice and haven’t spoken to him but once, I too feel like I have lost a friend. A constant in life who was infusing it with a kind of underlying melody ever since I was 12 or 13 years old. He’s always just been there, at times more in the background, at times taking centre stage. Looking out for news from him, looking forward to new songs (in the knowledge that he would actually appreciate feedback and might even respond to it) was just one of the joys of my life. It’ll be a lot bleaker knowing that there are no more news to be expected. The Wonderful Life lyric sheet on my wall that used to make me smile whenever I glanced at it – a reminder of the beauty of life despite all its ambiguities – now seems to say that life is fragile above all.
Colin was the only celebrity I ever dared – or cared – to get in touch with. I guess it was the extraordinary warmth in his voice that just made you feel sure he couldn’t be a bad person and that a peek behind the celebrity facade wouldn’t be disappointing. And it sure wasn’t. He was such an inspiration and yet so very down-to-earth, a kind and funny and approachable man. Now he is gone. What a loss. My heartfelt condolences to his family and friends. Rest in peace, Colin. You’ll not be forgotten. Through your music, you’ll remain very much alive in our hearts.

“Sometimes for the soul to flourish..heart need to be broken..”
I feel broken all the time now you’re gone…. before i felt a lot of warmth by thinking & listening to you but for the moment it’s like the night in my heart…it’s hard to face unreal reality…this begining of year turns in nightmare……i lost a friend..”mon étoile” inspiration ’cause you gave me a lot of light for drawing..i will keep on to feel you alive in my little artwork..but without your help..your lovely words you sent me it won’t taste the same…never again…i remember all the times i crossed the sea to cheer you in gigs since 2001 at Brighton…and after several times in the Ronnie’s Scott at was like heaven to listen you on the stage..last time was in 2012 in St Pancras Church..i dared to make you signed one of my portraits of you…you were someone so prevenant to me ’cause my English speaking is not so good but we could share a moment in the same time touching and funny…each meetings were unique with you…i never stopped to listen to your music since Wonderful life when i was a teenager…even in your slack period until 1999..despite that in France it was rather difficult to follow your musical work…we kept contact by mails and this made you really some-one special ’cause you knew to give your time to us..your fans…you became a great friend throught your kind behaviours..your advices about life…’cause you gave me help more than you might guess.. it was so wonderful for me…but nowadays i feel deeply sad to think to you and your loved ones who must be devasted by your absence…i would like to join them in the pain to make it less heavy…and to say how much i love..respect..admire…Colin..his voice will stay with me always as he took in exchange a piece of my heart for his last journey..i make a promise to you Colin..that your music be always breathing in & out..bisous my Great Artist..mon merveilleux ami. I had followed Colin ever since his big “Wonderfull Life” hit of the late 1980s. I never let that following down afterwards and regularly sought out anything that he had produced after that. I think his later material was growing even more in maturity and deep thought even beyond that initial sucess. I will miss that most gentle and thoughtful voice.

We are aiming to be at the memorial service. I’m sure it will be an evening of mixed emotions as I’m sure it will be a celebration of Colin’s music and I’m sure he would want everyone to have a wry smile on their face……but at the same time tinged with sadness. I’ve just seen a clip of Howard Jones perform Wonderful Life as a tribute at a recent gig of his. Paul & Linsey, Manchester x

I will sadly be unable to attend Colin’s Memorial Service as I live in Scotland, but I will be thinking of Colin, and all of his family at this time. I still find it so hard to believe that he is no longer with us, and like so many of his fans, have been listening to his music a lot, as if to try and seek some comfort from this devastating news. His music, as always, brings warmth and happiness, but it is tinged with sadness now, at the loss of the man who gifted us with his songs.
R.I.P. Colin. You will be forever missed and never forgotten. x

Colin’s legacy is that he gave us music & lyrics that are snippets of his soul.
There are not many of us who are blessed with this gift, the Creative Principle was in a good place when it gave Colin this talent.
The tin has gone but we are left with the beans & they are spread so far that he will live eternally while humans have ears.
Memories don’t leave like people do,they always stay with you.
Have a great night on friday 19th in the Peoples Republic of Liverpool.
I am trying to get to the gig,the last time i was in the Anglican Cathedral was for Biffa’s (Pale Fountains) & Pete De Freitas’s (Echo & The Bunnymen) memorial back in the day.

I wish I could be there as Colin’s music was such a big soundtrack for my life , as a child of the 80s I grew up on his amazing artistry . Then in recent years was able to reconnect with Colin through Facebook and his pledge campaign , it’s still not really sunk in that he is no longer with us . A live stream like what was produced for Lemmy of Motorhead on their youtube channel would be a great way to see this incredible talent and gentleman off for us fans who unfortunately cannot be there in person .

I will be there on Friday. A million times over. A fan since his Wonderful Life release.

I never had the courage (Dutch or otherwise) to meet Colin when attending his gigs. The doomed Liverpool gig at the Kazimier and the Zanzibar. The Night and day café Manchester and Shaw in Oldham, being the last gigs I attended. I chose to watch from afar, how wonderfully he treated his fans, and how much he always gave of himself. Star struck at 41yrs old, is such a strange feeling.

“Let me watch you make love” are the only words I will ever have said to him. This would be in Oldham, when he asked the crowd for requests for the final song of the night. He would have had absolutely no clue, just how amazingly high he made me feel, when he looked in my direction, and replied “that’s being a bit personal isn’t it” before sitting down to play that very track.

A large part of my life, you have been Colin… And will continue to be.. Thank you.

I had so hoped I would somehow manage to get the day off, hop on a plane and be there for the memorial service, but sadly things haven’t worked out that way. I’ll put on my Black T-shirt tomorrow night though, listen to his music and very much be there in spirit. It would have been really comforting to meet others who feel the same way as I do, to jointly mourn and celebrate Colin’s life. I’ll be thinking of all of you, of his family and of the man himself, of course (not that I’ve thought about much else in those last couple of weeks anyway). Love from Germany.

The craft of a songwriter is to speak to thousands all at once, yet make the listener feel that they are being spoken to personally, uniquely, as if it were a conversation. Colin had such ability…and he had it in spadefuls!

I am on the final leg of a 4,000 mile journey to say my goodbyes to arguably the greatest musical artist of the past 50 years.

Colin’s songs evoke joyfulness and sadness, hope and belief in the human spirit and fill the darkest winter days and the warmest of summer afternoons. We should all be thankful that we have lived during the era when Colin was here to showcase his astounding talent.

His departure will be hurting those close to him much more than myself. The nearest I came to meeting him was in a concert hall from 30 feet away. But that doesn’t mean that many like me will struggle to hold it together in Liverpool this evening.

If you see a 50 something in black jumper, black jacket, black jeans trying to appear unmoved in the cathedral (and failing), that’s me.

So I sit on the floor, with my head in my hands.

What an amazing album! At the moment my favourite one. It has a huge depth, lots of melancholy, some beautiful sadness and an outstanding instrumentation – the best of all Black/CV albums. With its Tex-Mex-, “desert”- and Latin-vibes and the great arrangements it sounds like an exceptional mixture between Calexico/Giant Sand & Daniel Lanois & Leonard Cohen [“I Hate You (Don’t Leave)] but distinct! The one thing which makes the difference is Colin’s beautiful voice. I know it’s very subjective but I’m hooked on it. Take some time and listen to it carefully. A timeless legacy!

  504. Steve Kuo 20 February 2016 at 11:42 am #

I was so shock when I see the posts on Black’s youtube videos, i did not know he was passes away three weeks ago.
Back in the 80’s, I was a radio DJ in Taipei Taiwan. I played 80’s music from UK, and was a big fan of Black’s “Wonderful Life “, “Paradise”, and many other songs. In 1992, when I left Taiepi to pursuit Master Degree in USA, the very last song I played on gthe radio, was “Wonderful Life”. I didicated the song to all my listeners, wished them have wondeful life.
So this song means so much to me in my DJ and music career. I am so sad to learn this tragic news.
Thank you for bringing us so many beautiful songs, we will never forget you.

I was actually wondering what Synthesisers were used on that album but I guess I may never know… R.I.P.

Its a nice gesture, this thing with the memorial order of service. Ive thought a moment about getting one because its nice to have one since I coundnt be there in person. But then I thought that nothing can bring Colin back from death, so why should I hold on to a peace of paper from his memorial? Hes with angels now, who will guide him further to whatever his next task will be. Holding on to him doesnt help Colin, doesnt help his family and certainly wont help me.
Besides, the way I look at life and death makes me feel that the soul cant die. So that Colin himself isnt really dead either, only his life on earth has ended when his body stopped living. His soul lives on, so Colin does to. Thats the way I believe it is. Its my truth and Im aware that whats true for me not necessarily is true for others.I respect that with the trust that others respect my views on the matter. And we always have Colins music, and our memories with it and the memory of the good man himself and that wonderful voice! Ill always love his voice.

What a lovely gesture. I couldn’t go to Liverpool unfortunately, so wanted to go to support Colin’s family and friends, but made donation. The Order of Service is a beautiful momento of a day that none of us would have wanted to happen. But it did. Nothing anybody can say can take the hurt away, but hope that the fact that Colin was so well thought of helps in some way. I have found that the normality of life pulls you through awful times.
I will always love Colin’s songs and amazing voice, we have that left to us.

I found out all too late that Colin had passed away recently (specifically the obituary in Uncut magazine) and wanted to pay my respects. This album in particular still stands up incredibly well for me, still got the vinyl with the bonus 12″, an Australian edition??? Anyway, sincere best wishes to Colin’s family.

It’s also hard for me to accept the death of Colin Vearncombe, a beautiful artist… gone too soon… Bravo for all you do and you’re going to do about him and his work. I’m really looking forward the opportunity of listenning to the new releases and reading the version of Colin’s poetry book. Sorry for my English, but i do my best :-).

  522. Mark Hird 18 May 2016 at 1:24 pm #

100% behind everything you do to promote the legacy that is Colin’s catalogue which I agree should gain more exposure.

The music bursary idea is an excellent one. I have a daughter who is studying song writing and performance and a son who is studying music technology. I would love to hear more about this.

Finally, is there any unreleased material that can be released? I also like the idea of popular artists recording Colin’s songs to get his tunes out to the masses.

Keep up the excellent work in Colin’s memory. Still can’t believe he is no longer with us

  523. Richard J 18 May 2016 at 5:40 pm #

    Bravo for this initiative.

Let’s all take Colin’s spirit and music to a wider audience and use his legacy to support new and upcoming artists. Although he has gone we have the rare ability to hear his unique voice and emotions through his songs and his thoughts and feelings through is poems. I am sure those who loved and respected Colin, like me will spread the word and build on his good work and on his name.

This is not the end – it is just the start!

Great news, even though I would have given anything for an update from Colin himself. This is life, we need to advance given the current situation.

The world wide Colin tribe is at your side and dedicated to spread the Love inspired by Colin’s music. He’s right here in the middle of us, singing us along.

I enjoy actively sharing his music with new people and do so successfully.

    Love & hugs to all.

Thank you so much for this post, an update and your great work on promoting Colin’s legacy. I love all the ideas!

I will be more than happy to help in spreading the word or supporting you in any other way if possible.

I just heard “It’s a Wonderful Life” on YouTube, quite by accident. I went to find where to buy this wonderful music when I cam across news of his tragic death. His loved ones and all he has touched have my deepest condolences. From what little I’ve read and listening to more of his music (which I intend to buy), he must have truly been a beautiful man. Please trust in God that he is good, whatever, wherever, whenever, why-ever, or any kind of ever he is. God bless all of you !!!

May you read these words, Colin, wherever you are…

Do you remember this little french guy that sent you words of encouragement, many years ago ? I told you then how I believed that success was a cyclical notion, and that I was persuaded, in the beginning of this new century, that time was the best judge, and that talent was always winning in the end, when fashions fade away ?

And you answered me (!), as a proof of your infinite kindness, and gave a little bit of your time for me (how many artists do that for their fans today, with such generosity and sincerity ?).

Then I gave you some advices to discover Gainsbourg’s work, because you wanted to, and sent you audio cassettes of some of my favourites french singers, as Jean-Louis Murat… You were so opened to culture, to others, always ready to share, to discover… La classe suprême. La marque des plus grands.
You have no idea how much I will miss you. As for Bowie, another giant gone too soon, I choose to keep the best and, if hearing your wonderful, wonderful voice will evidently never be the same now, continue to thrill at the sound of jewels like “Paradise”, “Hey Presto”, “I Can Laugh About It Now”, “You’re A Big Girl Now”, “All We Need Is The Money”, the magnificent “Paradise Lost”, “Too Many Times”, “Listen”, “Fly Up To The Moon”, “This Is Life” (this one particularly sounds so different now…), “Water On Snow”, “Alive”, etc… without forgetting the intemporal “Wonderful Life”, of course.

Continue to thrill, and to cry sometimes… but not for my sorrow about your leaving, but simply for the beauty of your music and your voice, so deep and so sweet.

    I will try to.

Because I know that you wouldn’t have appreciated that those tears were only here because you passed away, and only for causing pain and sorrow to me, to us all, just by hearing the sound of your voice… You’d surely prefer to see us all thrilling, and eventually crying, just because of the beauty of your songs, just for the magnificence of your art.

So I will try to, just to please you.

But I can’t tell you with certitude that I will succeed…

Wherever you are, I want to be there too in my time of leaving.
    Because “Paradise’s not Lost”.

Many thoughts & kisses to Camilla & the boys (your husband & father wasn’t just a great artist, but also a great man).

That’s just goodbye, not farewell, genius.

The song “Water on snow” is one of the most beautyful and deep song I ever heard ! And I can assure you all that I heard a lot of songs.

But I’m pretty sure there is two errors in the lyrics given by this page, and so on, in every pages of lyrics for this song on the net, as it is the official site of Colin.

Here they are : on the text, we can read :

“A beautiful refrain, dust with stars
But your smile now in disguise became a flat line”

But if you listen carefully to the song, you can here that it’s not what he says ! He says :
“A beautiful refrain, DUET with stars
But your smile now IN THIS SKY became a flat line”.
And force is to recognise it’s much more poetic and in harmony with the rest of the verse.

What do you think about it ?
Aren’t those two sentences mistakes on this site ?

Thank you to answer me, who ever you are, you who manage this web site, still Colin is unfortunately dead.

    • Nero 13 June 2016 at 2:40 pm #

      Hi David,
Thanks for that – yes the word DUST should be Duet. We have changed this now.
      ‘Disguise’ is correct.

Good to hear that work is being done to further Colin’s legacy. Some previously unheard music would do much towards healing from this tragedy.

I still cannot make sense of Colin’s death.

Rest in Peace Colin. You will always be remembered and in our heart.

First time I watched “wonderful life” on British music program ‘ChartAttack’ in Dubai, when i was in high school.

  541. Michael/Germany 16 August 2016 at 2:53 pm #

If a person has to leave this planet, then there usually is not much left. There are memories, maybe physical “things” to remind relatives and friends but not much more. When relatives and friends die, this person finally dies too.
Colin has given us so much more, he has created music that will continue to exist!
Therefore, thanks to everybody involved here who will continue to keep Colin’s music alive!
